I've never posted this footage prior to this. 15 years and a civil war later, this area has I believe seen major change and devastation. These images reflect more peaceful times in the heart of Aleppo, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world; inhabited since perhaps as early as the 6th millennium BC. Post opening of the Suez canal, Aleppo's previous spot on the Silk Road no longer as relevant lead to isolation of Syria in the past few decades further exacerbated the situation, although perhaps it is this very decline that has helped to preserve the old city of Aleppo, its medieval archi...

PRAY FOR SYRIA PRAY FOR ALEPPO PRAY FOR WORLD PRAY FOR HUMANITY THE FALL OF ALEPPO After and Before Before And After 2007 to 2016 I'm Not Going TO Monotize this Video In the five years since protestors in Syria first demonstrated against the four-decade rule of the Assad family, hundreds of thousands of Syrians have been killed in the ensuing violence and some twelve million people—more than half the country’s pre-war population—have been displaced. The country has descended into an ever-more-complex civil war: Jihadis promoting a Sunni theocracy have eclipsed many opposition forces fighting for a democratic Syria. Regional powers have backed various local forces to advance their geopolitical interests on Syrian battlefields. The United States has been at the fore of a coalition conducting air strikes on the self-proclaimed Islamic State. Russia too has carried out air strikes in Syria; though it claimed to be primarily targeting the Islamic State, it appeared to have more often targeted militants who seemed to pose a more immediate threat to the regime. The anniversary comes amid a cessation of hostilities brokered by the United States and Russia that has brought a sharp reduction in violence to Syria and allowed humanitarian relief into some areas that have been besieged by government-backed forces and rebel groups. But UN-backed efforts to negotiate a conflict-ending settlement remain fruitless as the government and opposition groups, and their respective international sponsors, remain at an impasse on the fundamental issue of whether President Bashar al-Assad can play a role in Syria’s future. Most of the fog of war is about the editorial line and it's about certain prejudices existing in societies. Dmitry Babich, journalist, Sputnik International "There is a simplistic notion about extremists versus moderates and this has made the situation on the ground appear to be a clear battle between those who have a Jihadist tag versus those who don't," says Lina Khatib, head of the MENA programme at Chatham House, an international affairs think tank based in London. "If we compare what is happening on the ground with Mosul, we have the paramilitary forces and the militias taking part in this battle. And these are characterised positively or negatively, depending on who is doing the reporting." But with endless media offices, across numerous cities, reporting on the same multi-layered situation and catering to the same, limited number of viewers, the fog surrounding the truth of war is here to stay. "30 or 40 years ago, the fog of war was about the difficulties of getting to certain places, the difficulties of filming there. Now the fog of war is mostly inside the editorial offices of various media outlets. The media in the West doesn't notice the civilian casualties in Mosul, just like the Russian media doesn't always notice the civilian casualties in Aleppo," says Dmitry Babich, journalist for news agency Sputnik International. I visited Syria in October 2000. Aleppo was such a beautiful city to visit. This is a clip I shot walking the Souq al-Madina, the main market in the city center adjacent to the Citadel. Post opening of the Suez canal, Aleppo's previous spot on the Silk Road no longer as relevant lead to isolation of Syria in the past few decades further exacerbated the situation, although perhaps it is this very decline that has helped to preserve the old city of Aleppo, its medieval architecture and traditional heritage. It won the title of the "Islamic Capital of Culture 2006", and has also witnessed a wave of successful restorations of its historic landmarks, until the start of the Syrian Civil War in 2011 and the Battle of Aleppo. The city's strategic trading position attracted settlers of all races and beliefs who wished to take advantage of the commercial roads that met in Aleppo from as far as China and Mesopotamia to the east, Europe to the west, and the Fertile Crescent and Egypt to the south. The largest covered souq-market in the world is in Aleppo, with an approximate length of 13 kilometres (8.1 miles). Souq al-Madina, as it is locally known, is an active trade centre for imported luxury goods, such as raw silk from Iran, spices and dyes from India, and coffee from Damascus. Souq al-Madina is also home to local products such as wool, agricultural products and soap. Most of the souqs date back to the 14th century and are named after various professions and crafts, hence the wool souq, the copper souq, and so on. (from Wikipedia)

It's been almost four years since major Syrian cities have been under a bloody siege after the Bashar al Assad government's crackdown on rebel forces. The war has killed over 3,12,000 people since March 2011. Over 90,000 of them were civilians, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor has confirmed. Harrowing accounts of Syrian nationals trapped in the city of Aleppo have emerged with desperate calls for help. Some even sent their final goodbyes. Aleppo has become one of the worst fronts in the more than 5-year long Syrian conflict. Once Syria’s most populous city, in recent times it has seen intensive bombing every day with the entire city affected by the fighting. Hundreds of civilian casualties have been recorded with more than 100 children being killed thus far in the month of August alone. Aleppo has suffered years of artillery strikes, barrel bombing and scud missiles, but the current round of bombing has been the most intense ever. Hospitals and camps for displaced people have not been spared, and attacks on residential areas have driven thousands from the shells of their homes. With nowhere to go, many are forced to sleep in public buildings or outdoors. Water, electricity and healthcare facilities have also been deliberately targeted bringing essential and lifesaving services to the brink of collapse. Critical shortages of medical supplies and physicians leave many desperate patients without hope of survival. Although a break in the siege was made on August 6th, regular artillery strikes have made humanitarian access difficult. The Al-Imdaad Foundation has however, been able to work through partners on the ground to ensure that essential and lifesaving supplies have reached those in need. In Aleppo there is the risk of a humanitarian catastrophe unparalleled in the over five years of carnage and destruction in the Syrian conflict. This situation should ring in the heart of every individual with an ounce of humanity. Continue donating and help us provide lifesaving humanitarian aid to the war battered people of Aleppo.

On The Listening Post this week: How does coverage of Mosul and Aleppo differ? Plus, the Lebanese media mosaic. Mosul and Aleppo: Two cities under siege With conflicts in the Middle East ongoing, it's up to the media to inform us about what is happening on the battlefield. Both Mosul in Iraq and Aleppo in Syria are cities held by rebel groups, surrounded by avenging armies and bombarded by international air power. But with all the geopolitics in play, reporting from the field is seldom black and white. Talking us through the story are: Dmitry Babich, journalist, Sputnik International; Howard Amos, independent journalist, Russia; Lina Khatib, head of the MENA programme, Chatham House; and Kim Sengupta, defence editor, The Independent (UK). On our radar: Hungary's largest-selling opposition newspaper, Nepszabadsag, has landed in the hands of an oligarch with ties to Prime Minister Viktor Orban's ruling party. After the recent passing of the king, the Thai government is making sure that its lese majeste laws remain effective in the digital age - by asking Google to remove any content that defames the royal family. To avoid an alleged media bias, US presidential candidate Donald Trump's campaign has decided to start reporting on itself - the daily 'Trump Tower Live' looks a bit like a 24 news channel with budget issues. Lebanon's media and the politicisation of a garbage crisis Lebanon's media is crowded, diverse and highly politicised. We analyse the impact of the media's politics on its output. Our case study: last year's protests over the garbage crisis. It’s a story of how a deeply divided media fractured the consensus on a civic issue - and the activists who are pushing for alternative narratives ever since. Talking us through the story are: Karma Khayat , vice chairwoman, Al Jadeed TV; Nabil Dajani, professor of communication and media studies, American University Beirut; Jad Melki, associate professor of journalism and media studies, Lebanese American University; and Habib Battah, editor, BeirutReport.com More from The Listening Post on: YouTube - http://aje.io/listeningpostYT Facebook - http://facebook.com/AJListeningPost Twitter - http://twitter.com/AJListeningPost Website - http://aljazeera.com/listeningpost

16.00 uur Den Bosch, November Music za 12 nov, 14.00 uur Enschede, Grote Kerk wo 16 nov, 20.00 uur Meppel, Theater Ogterop wo 14 dec, 2015 uur Dordrecht, Kunstmin za 14 jan, 2015 uur Amsterdam, Podium Mozaïek vr 3 feb, 21.00 uur
